John

It's a science fiction take on the story "The Man who would be King"  or DreamWorks "El Dorado".  The two main characters are soldiers who are overly ambitious, believing that they are more deserving than being mere grunts and would be better leaders than politicians.  After chasing down and commandeering an enemy ship filled with weapons on the outer rim of known space, they receive word that the war has ended.  Seeing no rush to return home they venture to an uncharted planet where they decide to have some fun with the weapons that they commandeered.  Upon reaching the new planet they find a race of alien people who are physically smaller than them and whose culture is similar to to that of world during the 1700's.  The aliens do not receive them very well at first, but the two protagonists manage to persuade the aliens to allow them to help them win a war that has been going on for decades.  They begin by asking for riches such as gold, but as time goes on, they truly believe that they can change this new world for the better.  However, they find themselves in trouble when the military that they left tracks them down and seeks to punish them for abandoning the military and for stealing weapons.

Not organic and whimsical as gaudi architecture but really cool ideas.

Homework for next week

Susie - Finalize character using my feedback - Start working on next character (gather lots of good reference and do a minimum of 10 sketches using basic values to establish materials).

Ryan - Finalize character using my feedback - Start working on next character (gather lots of good reference and do a minimum of 10 sketches using basic values to establish materials).

Albert - The overall design is done, so now I want you to start trying to bring the "Toph style" into the character.  You also need to do a different pose because as it is now,  it's way too close to the reference you used-  Do 6 variations of his mechanical arm and reference real life machinery and study how it works.  The only way this arm will look cool is if it is believable and has real functionality - Start working on next character (gather lots of good reference and do a minimum of 10 sketches using basic values to establish materials).

Kevin - Gather a whole bunch of good fantasy reference (other concept artists) - Do a minimum of 10 studies from that reference (remember to not just copy, but to break the image down and study it in depth) - Do a minimum of 10 sketches for your first character using basic values to establish materials).

Jiye - Take the sketch I chose and do 5 new versions of it, but make it bigger, more detailed and add in values (keep the overall design the same but start playing with small things like different patterns in her dress or her shoes, ect...) - Do another 5 versions of the same sketch but I want you to digitally draw them because you need to start getting comfortable with drawing and painting in photoshop.
